Lake Sabrina

Lake Sabrina is one of the beautiful lakes up the hill from Bishop, CA. Getting there involves some careful maneuvering around the photographers standing in the middle of the road.

But the fall colors were outstanding! I couldn't wait to get to the lake.

This is how I've seen it in the past.

Whoa! Where has all the water gone??? This pile of rocks used to be an island.

The fall colors were still great -

But because of a drought the last 2 years, the lake level has been reduced to the original 2 lakes that were there before the dam was built in the early 1900s.

This was the same scene back in 2007.

Phil decided he'd like to drive around on the lake bed. I couldn't believe you were allowed to do that! That's the useless dam behind him.

The view from the lake bed.

I was amazed that the tree stumps were still intact after 100 years.

We saw the old engine blocks they use to anchor boats on the lake. Oh goody -rusty stuff!!!

  1. Your 2007 pictures are quite a contrast to what it looks like now. Still a pretty area but we would have liked to see more water in the lake!

  2. We discovered the same sad view of Lake Sabrina last summer when we traveled there while camping in Bishop. It was nice to see your old photos. We had never been there before, so it was rather disappointing.

  3. Man, your pictures really show the drastic effect of the drought. How sad. But the colors are gorgeous.

  4. Quite a difference in the old and new photos, but I guess it's the same all over the western states. It's amazing how beautiful water makes our world, isn't it?

New Mexico had some really good rain this year which brought lake levels up and really brought out the green in the landscape. Hopefully California will have a good, rainy year that will do the same. :)

  5. The dry lake makes one think seriously of water conservation. Your comparative photos are great.

  8. I guess sometimes it's nice to get a fish eye view of a lake?

Nice of Phil to take his kayak for a "boating expedition" on the lake. :c)
