Salt Lake City

From Capitol Reef NP we moved on to the Salt Lake City area. I've been in the area before, but had never gone to the Capitol. One hundred years old, it sits atop a hill in the center of the city.

There are 4 large paintings under the rotunda that show the earliest non-native explorations into the region.

There is also a circular cyclorama depicting scenes from 19th century Utah life. The dome shows seagulls flying across the blue sky.

We also went to nearby Temple Square, where the Mormon Temple took 40 years to complete and was finished in 1893.

We weren't allowed in the Temple, but did go in the Tabernacle, home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

And the Assembly Hall, a charming 1882 meeting hall.

Inside the Assembly Hall.

There were lots of buffalo in the area, and we finally figured out why. There are 550-700 buffalo on nearby Antelope Island, and we headed there.

So they should be easy to find, right? We looked for quite a while, and only found some poop.

But finally we ran into a big guy -

And then a whole herd!

Things got interesting when a coyote showed up, but they managed to get along just fine.

I even saw twins getting a snack! Buffalo were first introduced here way back in 1893.

We also saw a Pronghorn Antelope, the fastest animal in North America, and native to the area.

  2. Where did you camp? I lived in SLC back in the 60s. Had no idea there were buffalo out on the island.

  3. How come those buffalo weren't painted as pretty as the one in your first picture? ;c)
